Spooktacular Graveyard of Books Sale in Monett This Halloween Weekend

The Spooktacular Graveyard of Books Sale is creeping into Monett for a two-day book bargain event on Friday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31, from 8 a.m. to noon at the BLRL Admin Building, 213 Sixth St., Monett.

This is not a “pick up one paperback and politely leave” kind of sale. This is a bag-and-box book sale, which means the real question is not “Should I buy another book?” The question is “How strong are my arms, and did I park close enough?”

The book sale details you need before you haunt the stacks

Here is the quick version, for anyone already looking for their car keys.

Sale format

Bag-and-box sale both days

Coffin full of books

Extra treat

Trick-or-treat candy for those in costume

The sale runs across both days, so early birds can swoop in Friday morning, while Saturday shoppers can make it part of their Halloween plans before the candy parade begins. And yes, costumes are encouraged. If you show up dressed as a vampire carrying cookbooks, a ghost collecting mysteries, or a parent who just needs five quiet minutes, you are in the spirit.

The best part is the pricing. A coffin full of books costs $5, while a body bag costs $3. That makes this a great chance to stock up without giving your wallet a jump scare.

Bring a costume, leave with candy and books

Halloween weekend already comes with plenty of reasons to dress up. This sale adds one more: trick-or-treat candy will be available for those in costume.

That means you can browse the Graveyard of Books as a witch, wizard, skeleton, pirate, pumpkin, superhero, or suspiciously tired adult wearing cat ears from three Halloweens ago. It counts. Probably.

The costume candy makes the event especially fun for families. Kids get the thrill of dressing up, picking out books, and collecting a sweet treat. Adults get affordable reading material and the noble satisfaction of saying, “We did something educational today,” while also enjoying Halloween candy. Everybody wins.

If you are bringing children, the bag-and-box setup can make the experience even more fun. Let each child help choose a few titles, then add family picks to the coffin or body bag. It is like trick-or-treating, except the treats have chapters.

Tips for making the most of the sale

A little planning can turn a good book haul into a legendary one.

Arrive with time to browse

The sale runs all day Friday, but Saturday ends at noon. If you like to scan titles carefully, flip through pages, and debate whether you need another cozy mystery, give yourself enough time.

Think about who you are shopping for

Before you arrive, make a quick mental list. Kids’ books, large-print books, cookbooks, thrillers, craft books, classics, biographies, holiday reads, whatever you hope to find. You may not find every category, but a loose plan helps when the book goblin takes over.

Bring your reading wish list and your own Boxes!

If you keep a list on your phone, check it before you go. Sales like this are perfect for finding surprise matches. Nothing beats spotting a title you almost bought full price and whispering, “Not today, retail.” fill your bag or box to overflowing!

Wear something comfortable

Books are wonderful. Books are also sneaky little bricks. Comfortable shoes and easy-to-move-in clothes will help, especially if you plan to dig through the selection like an archaeologist uncovering ancient paperbacks.

The Spooktacular Graveyard of Books Sale in Monett This Halloween Weekend is practical, affordable, and just the right amount of spooky. For $5, you can fill a coffin with books. For $3, you can fill a body bag. That is hard to beat, unless a ghost offers you a first edition, and honestly, check the fine print before accepting anything from a ghost.

Mark the calendar for Friday, Oct. 30, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday, Oct. 31, 8 a.m. to noon, at the BLRL Admin Building, 213 Sixth St. in Monett.

Bring a costume if you want candy. Bring curiosity if you want books. Bring both if you are ready to leave with treats for now and reads for later.
